“My Soul is Athirst for God - Exploring Our Desires”
What do you seek?  Prayer begins with desire, and God has planted deep within us a longing that only God can satisfy.

All kinds of desires pass through us every day, and we can bounce from one impulse to the next, not quite knowing what we are really looking for or why we feel perpetually dissatisfied.  What is the deepest hunger of our hearts, and can we satisfy it?  Can disappointment or frustration become our teachers, rather than simply shut us down?  How can claiming our heart’s desire set us free?  What is God’s yearning for us?

This weekend retreat will give us a space to identify, befriend, and pray with our desires.  Through presentations and conversations, guided meditations and attentive listening in silence, we will explore the desires of our lives, and listen to God’s desires for us.

It was fear that drove me into recovery, but it is love that keeps me there.  And there’s no going back.  I used to think that a saint was someone who had no desires.  Now I know otherwise.  A saint is someone who knows what he or she most deeply desires and, if need be, can let everything else go.  By either definition, I’m no saint.  Often I lose touch with what I really long for.  I find myself kidnapped again by lesser desires, smaller wants.  But at least I can trust now that listening to my deepest desires is a worthy enterprise, even a holy one.
--Margaret Bullitt-Jonas, Holy Hunger

This weekend retreat (Friday evening through Sunday morning) will be held at Dominican Retreat & Conference Center, 1945 Union St., Niskayuna, New York (www.dslcny.org), and will be open to the public for a moderate fee.  Details to follow.  For more information, phone 581-393-4169, or email dslcny [at] nycap.rr.com
